Digital Extreme drops big news for Warframe
As revealed during the keynote presentation at TennoCon 2021, Warframe is going to get both crossplay and cross-save functionality. This will allow players to matchmake across all consoles and move their accounts from one platform to another. While cross-platform and cross-save are becoming more common these days, this is still big news. There was never a guarantee that Digital Extremes would add these features to Warframe. In fact, back in 2019, the game’s creative director, Steve Sinclair, described it as among the “highest-risk things” that the studio could ever do to Warframe. Now that it’s 2021 and more games are getting the same features, it seems like Digital Extremes is ready to take the risk. While not explicitly confirming it, Sinclair did imply that the reason why it took so long for Digital Extremes to add crossplay and cross-save to Warframe was that it had to negotiate with the other platforms. Of course, Sinclair was careful not to drop any names. However, anyone who’s been following the gaming industry for a while knows all too well that the most resistance could have come from Sony. Case in point, as revealed during the trial between Epic and Apple, Epic has to pay Sony to enable crossplay on the PlayStation platform. In any case, this isn’t important anymore. What matters now is that cross-play is coming to Warframe. Everyone can play together regardless of platform. Not to mention, the option to play Warframe on the Nintendo Switch once the feature is added is always a nice bonus. In a press release, Digital Extremes COO Sheldon Carter described crossplay and cross-save as “one of many more efforts” from the studio as they attempt to bring more Warframe players together. At the moment, all we know is that Digital Extremes is working to make the feature available for Warframe. The studio failed to tell us when exactly we can expect this feature to be ready, so it might be a while before that happens. If playing Warframe on the go is important to you, you could technically do it without getting another console or even a phone. The free-to-play third-person action game should run well on the Steam Deck. Of course, just like the cross-play and cross-save functionality for Warframe, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be getting your hands on the Steam Deck anytime soon.
