Venom: Let There Be Carnage will premiere on October 1
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the highly anticipated sequel to 2018’s Venom. The Tom Hardy-led film pulled in $856 million against an estimated $110 million budget, which all but guaranteed that a sequel was coming. Unfortunately, that sequel has had the tough luck of premiering during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the uncertainty caused by this global issue, Sony has had to play around with the premiere date of Venom: Let There Be Carnage more than a couple of times. As a matter of fact, there were rumors of Sony deciding to push back Venom: Let There Be Carnage to 2022. Now, after “confirming” that the Venom sequel will drop on October 15, 2021, Sony has decided to release the upcoming sequel earlier. Instead of an October 15 release date, Venom: Let There Be Carnage will come two whole weeks earlier. The film is now scheduled for October 1. Sony did not specify the reason behind the change. However, it doesn’t take an expert to realize that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings played a key role in it. After the controversy surrounding Disney’s hybrid release strategy, the House of Mouse decided to release Shang-Chi exclusively in theaters. Although earlier reviews suggested that the film would do well, the actual numbers blew away everyone’s expectations. As Shang-Chi released over the Labor Day weekend, the latest MCU film pulled in north of $90 million at the domestic box office. This allowed Shang-Chi to set the record for the highest Labor Day weekend gross ever. With that said, Sony might have taken Shang-Chi’s success as a sign that audiences are willing to make compromises just to get a chance to watch movies in theaters. Not to mention, because Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a sequel, it might end up doing just as well as Shang-Chi did, if not break the previous records set by the original Venom film when it first premiered back in 2018. Only time will tell if this will happen. The only sure thing here is that Venom: Let There Be Carnage has the necessary star power to curb expectations and prove everyone wrong. Here’s hoping that the Venom sequel does well so we can get a third Venom film.
