Bungie, current developer of Destiny, created Halo way back when. They already had plans for Destiny before splitting off from Microsoft and leaving Halo behind, so easter eggs connecting the two universes already exist in the latter. Now, a leak suggests that such a crossover is actually going to happen, for real. Bungie is turning 30 this year, and while it is best known for sci-fi shooters involving folks in power armor beating the crap out of various alien species, alongside Halo and Destiny the company as worked on games in the Marathon and Myth franchises. Nonetheless, the sci-fi shooters are what they’re best known for, and their impact on the industry cannot be understated - whatever you might think of the games themselves.
Bungie hasn’t overdone the whole anniversary celebration angle so far, and we’re already beyond the year’s half-way mark. According to a new leak, this is because the company has some special plans in store for the fall, which may include a sort of reunion consisting of a crossover between Destiny 2 and Halo Infinite. The latter still hasn’t got a release date, but the general consensus is that it will launch sometime this November. A reputable leaker known as Wish (sharing a name with a less than reputable webshop sure is a choice) shared the information on Twitter, claiming that on the 30th of December, a limited time crossover mission will be available in Destiny 2 wherein Guardians will visit the titular Halo ring from the other franchise.
Mission takes place on the halo from halo. 🤗 — Wish (@WishYaLuckk) August 21, 2021 Now, unlike a bunch of datamined information about Halo Infinite leaking recently, this is just hearsay with no evidence so far, so we wouldn’t put a whole lot of stock in it. While the crossover makes sense on paper, there are a number of factors at play here that could hinder or prevent it entirely - most of them legal. Ever since Bungie split off from Microsoft, the two companies have no kind of official partnership beyond Destiny being on Xbox and PC. Even though Bungie created Halo, the rights stayed with Microsoft, which is why the franchise migrated to 343 Industries, who continue to create Microsoft-exclusive Halo content. Allowing a crossover of this scale - not just some promotion, not even just a few items, but a whole mission played on a Halo ring - would requite a massive agreement between the companies. That said, we do see this happening in some form. Xbox wouldn’t quite be where it is today without Halo, and no doubt there is a huge degree of respect and camaraderie between Bungie and Microsoft despite parting ways. Also, if this crossover appears in all versions of Destiny 2, it would be a funny and unexpected first instance of playable Halo content on a PlayStation console. Naturally, the crossover may be exclusive to Xbox and PC - in-game content gated by platform is hardly unheard of - but the thought is still amusing. Whether or not anything comes of this is, at this point, anyone’s guess. We certainly hope it will happen, but make sure to temper your expectations lest you end up getting disappointed. Halo Infinite is set to launch sometime this November.
