Surprisingly enough, it’s taken Disney nearly three decades to announce a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. A little over half a decade since it was first announced, Disney has finally given the Halle Bailey-led remake a release date.
When is The Little Mermaid remake going to premiere?
According to a report from THR, The Little Mermaid is going to premiere on May 26, 2023. The announcement comes as part of a larger roadmap that includes at least four unnamed Marvel Studios films in 2024, as well as two other unannounced Pixar features. As we’ve already mentioned, The Little Mermaid was first announced in 2016, although it wasn’t until 2019 that the movie found its lead character in Grown-ish’s Bailey. Since then, we’ve seen Bailey post the movie’s first official photo of herself as the red-haired Mermaid where she detailed how the experience had her stronger. The award-winning director, Rob Marshall, is set to direct The Little Mermaid’s live-action remake. Marshall previously worked with Disney in 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, 2014’s Into the Woods, and 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns. Meanwhile, Jonah Hauer-King will take on the role of Prince Eric. Jacob Tremblay and Daveed Diggs have signed on as Flounder and Sebastian, respectively. Finally, Melissa McCarthy will star opposite Bailey’s Ariel as the evil sea-switch, Ursula. We should expect Disney to announce more details about The Little Mermaid in the coming months now that it has confirmed its release date. Just try not to get your hopes too high up on a trailer - although we might be wrong as filming already wrapped up last July. Having said that, only time will tell if fans will gravitate towards the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid just as much as they did the original animated film.
